ASPS Examines Popularity of Plastic Surgery Among Teenagers
Educated in Mexico, Dr. Jaime Campos Leon holds a doctor of medicine from the Juarez University of Durango Medical School, and completed plastic surgery training at the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon. To stay up-to-date in his current practice at Campos Leon Plastic Surgery, Dr. Jaime Campos holds active membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Recent statistics from the ASPS show physicians performed approximately 229,000 cosmetic procedures on 13- to 19-year-old patients in 2017. However, research by surgeons with the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute found little if any consensus among the medical community when it comes to implementing specific teen plastic surgery guidelines.
The ASPS recently distributed a press release that included recommended guidelines such as waiting until nasal growth has ceased (generally age 15-16 for females and age 16-18 for males) before using rhinoplasty to correct significant deformities of the nose. It also drew clear lines between procedures that are overwhelmingly safe for young people (such as otoplasty) and procedures that should generally be restricted to adults (such as liposuction and breast augmentation).
